WOOSH!
Although we knew we were headed directly for an airplane, we
couldn't help but want to do a repeat of last summer's
adventure in a jet boat - wow these things are fun.
Luckily for us, it was more about scenery than class five rapids,
but our captain did manage to throw in a bit of splash and
spray amongst his history of the area. It was a great way to say
farewell to Oregon.
Stealth Photography
Believe it or not, Brent is actually taking this photo - it took
three tries to make it look natural, but it does, don't you
think?
The Sub
We unfortunately didn't have time for the
guided tour of this sub.
Beautiful But Is It Trustworthy?
The bridge was made of an experimental composite metal
that is reported to be getting brittle over time. One of the
engineers refuses to actually drive his car across it - he's
so certain it could come down at any moment.
Variations On A Theme
Instead of the bridge splitting in the middle, this one
actually just raises part of the plat form up to one of two
different levels, depending on what is coming through.
A Fitting Mother's Day Tribute
The first bald eagle either of us had ever
seen in the wild, it's also the first bald eagle's
nest. If you look closely you can see the nest,
but if you look VERY closely you can see
mama-eagle checking us out.
Could It Be Any Cuter?
Our captain was careful to cut the speed considerably
when we came close to boats like this one - the wake our
the jet boat creates could have caused a capsize.
The Locks
These antiquated locks carry boats to this day up to the
upper level from the rapids. They are unfortunately due to
be retired in only a few months.
What Are Those Yellow Flowers?
Though this photo does not do them justice, these wild
yellow flowers are all ablaze across the Oregon
countryside - they are obviously a weed and we have
heard cause allergy-attacks, but they are magnificent.
The Paper Mill
The river is actually flanked by two paper mills. 1/3 of the
country's paper comes through Oregon. Did you know
that? Yeah, we didn't either...
The End Of The Line
Luckily the Coast Guard saw fit to make us stop there
(with signs of course), but we're glad we got a chance to
see these - we hadn't even known they existed and it's
pretty neat to know they're almost in the middle of town!
Now You're Talkin'!
Our captain takes us for a "spin" these boats are so
famous for.
