"We're Serious About Our Fireworks"

That's a direct quote from a wonderful Pittsburgh native who sat
in front of us at the Pirates' game.  He wasn't kidding - in any
respect.  Not only were the fireworks at the end of the evening
spectacular, the day was amazing.  We had great weather and
the city really comes alive for the 4th of July.  We joined hordes
of celebrating people along the river - many of whom were in
boats - as the whole city turned out for the fireworks which were
launched from a barge.

After all the revelry, we stayed at an old monastery, The Priory,
which has been turned into an incredibly charming bed and
breakfast.  The "character" was not limited to the building,
however, as the owner/manager was a hoot!
Pittsburgh Pirates Game
Ironically enough, this picture looks almost identical to one
we took almost two years ago when we were in Cincinnati
at America Stadium.
Every Pirate Must Have His Parrot
Full of energy, yet none of it mean spirited, we
laughed as the mascot hurled hot dogs into
the stadium with a rocket launcher!
The View To Die For
From our seats on the third baseline, we were afforded
this view of the city.  The yellow bridge on the left is the
Roberto Clemente Bridge in honor of the Pirates most
famous player.
Waiting For Dark
We thought we'd arrived early, but found we were hardly
the first to stake a spot to watch the fireworks.
Clearing Out
This picture gives you the feel of just how many people
were there.  It's definitely a city event.
A Little Worse For Wear
After a very hot and sticky day, Kate poses dutifully on the
bed at the Priory in front of the "gift basket" that came with
the room.  We got both our tickets to the game and these
Pittsburgh Pirates hats in the deal!
The Priory
This bed and breakfast is not exactly located
in the "posh" side of town, but what it lacks in
location it more than makes up for in charm.
Converted from a monastery, the keys are
still metal, the stairs creak and there is no
elevator.
