"Houston, We Have A Problem..."
We went from ancient China to the far reaches of space...all in
one day. Wow, the Houston area is amazing.
At the Johnson Space Center we got to see where the
astronauts train on equipment they'll use at the space station,
as well as the original "Mission Control," which has been
restored to exactly how it looked when the U.S. sent Buzz
Aldren and Neil Armstrong to the moon.
The center has lots of exhibits - most of which are geared
toward kids, but are definitely enjoyable for kids of all ages.
You Are About To Enter Space
The Johnson Space Center located in Webster, Texas has
a visitor center which allows guest to see the past and
present of the U.S. space program.
Space Head Gear
Not terribly comfortable, but at least it protects
your eyes from freezing shut.
The Space Station
This mock-up hangs in the museum part of the center and
you can push buttons on a panel below and a laser beam
will shine on the corresponding part of the station.
My Swartz Is Bigger Than Yours
Kate has become white helmet.
Zero Gravity Cruising
Kate navigates the zero gravity craft in order
to complete the important mission this
Space Center employee has issued her.
Shuttle Test Simulator
We toured the simulator area of the Johnson Space
Center. In this building (which is two football fields wide
and 8 stories tall) they house replicas of all of the space
station components and several shuttle simulators.
It's Not A Kia
The control panel on the Space Shuttle is everything it's
been made out to be - complicated and dense!
CanadaArm2
The shuttle docking bay uses an arm built in
Canada (thus the name). This one has been
built to work on earth.
Mission Control
This room was updated over the years as technology
became more advanced, but when it was retired, the
original computers were retrieved and it was restored to its
original state.
Remember Rotary Dial Phones?
Our tour guide confessed he was too young to remember
them when he pointed them out to us on the right and left
of this panel - they are located above all the colored
buttons.
The Green Room
This mission control room was referred to as the green
room because of the color of the panels on the consoles.
Right below it, is the back up "Brown Room" which, you
guessed it, has brown panels on the consoles.
