Cold But Utterly Beautiful
Located on 3,200 acres of natural beauty, Stone Mountain Park
features a wide variety of fun family activities including a sky
tram to the top of the mountain, a scenic train ride around the
mountain and a host of shops and shows. Most times of the
year they also have a laser light show. It wasn't Disneyland, but
then again, what is? We had a great time.
Stone Mountain is a quartz monzonite dome monadnock in
Stone Mountain, Georgia. At its summit, the elevation is 1,686
feet and 825 feet above the surrounding area. The carving is
very impressive, and it makes for an odd but interesting site for
a little amusement park-like area.
At Night The Whole Place Is Covered In Lights
We took a family picture as we were leaving the park.

The Snow Zone Was Sold Out
We didn't have snow pants - which would
really have been a requirement - but the
snow-zone section was sold out when we got
there. We were all a bit disappointed.

The Mountain And Its Carving
The largest bas relief sculpture in the world,
the Confederate Memorial Carving depicts
three Confederate leaders of the Civil War,
President Jefferson Davis and Generals
Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. "Stonewall"
Jackson (and their favorite horses,
"Blackjack", "Traveller", and "Little Sorrel",
respectively). The entire carved surface
measures 3 acres.
Gutzon Borglum Was Commissioned To Do The Carving
Borglum abandoned the project in 1923 (and later went on
to complete Mount Rushmore).
