A Canyon, A Texas-Sized Show and Fireworks

This mysterious terra cotta badland, replete with canyons and
bluffs is the second largest canyon in the U.S. It is roughly 120
miles long and has an average width of 6 miles, but reaches a
width of 20 miles at places. Its maximum depth is 800 feet.
Palo Duro Canyon has been called "The Grand Canyon of
Texas," both for its size and for the dramatic geological
features, including the multicolored layers of rock and steep
mesa walls which are similar to those in the Grand Canyon.

There is an outdoor amphitheatre here where we saw the
musical "Texas" which has been running for 43 years. After the
show, there was a special fireworks display and several extra
patriotic songs performed.

We had a wonderful evening in which to enjoy this beautiful

These singers wave to a horsback rider
carrying the Texas State flag on the top of the
canyon ridge. It was a pretty cool site on a
wonderful evening for an outdoor show
(especially in the Texas summer.)
