A Cliff Dwelling Community
Forty-year-old self-taught anthropologist and historian Adolph
Bandelier came to New Mexico Territory in 1880 in order to
trace social organization. Men from Cochiti Pueblo guided him
to their ancestral homes in Frijoles Canyon where its sheer
cliffs, year-round stream, and distinctive cave-room architecture
captured his imagination. The National Monument now bears
his name.
